The opposite happens here, in Greece, with the words for 'hardware'
and 'software'. Hardware is commonly referred to as "eeleeko" (yliko,
a Greek word that means 'material') and software as "logeesmeeko"
(logismiko, vaguely reminiscent of "logos", the ancient Greek word for
"logic").

Still, everyone uses "email", both in print and speech a lot more than
the equivalent phrase, "electronic message".
