I must say that this one critical point is what made me choose FreeBSD over Linux way back in ~1992. It is possible, indeed almost mandatory in a commercial setting, to build a local repository containing the OS and *everything* required to build it. Good change management is not about tracking the latest and greatest, it's about being able to make sensible decisions about which changes to implement, when and, most of all, knowing why.
