No, I am not familiar with the details of this. What I see is that it tries to make aliases for the device in /dev. So there already is a name for the device you can use, but the alias (which might be a symlink with a convenient name) is not a valid filename, so it is not created. The code in 9-stable is in sys/kern/kern_conf.c line 995. NB: I re-added the mailinglist in the addresses. Other people might know more.
