You can increase the time that the kernel waits for SCSI devices by changing 
the line "SCSI_DELAY=" in the kernel configuration file located in 
/sys/i386/conf (for x86 machines anyway)
You might try a value of 20000 to 30000 (to and 30 seconds respectively)
