Alas, this time round it seems to have worked. fdisk
reports the geometry I supplied. Saddly 

mount -t ext2fs /dev/vn0s1 ./mnt 

reports 

ext2fs: /dev/vn0s1 Operation not permited

(Sigh) I suppose the 'excitement' never ends.
