Thanks for the info. Mine gives a slightly different dmesg output:

(ncr0:6:0): "EXABYTE EXB-8200 253G" type 1 removable SCSI 1

So, its a slightly different model, maybe with an older firmware
(are firmware upgrades possible on these drives?) However, since it is a
similar model, I was wondering what you do to use a tape. The tape I'm
trying to use is an Exabyte 112m tape, and as I said before, I tried a 'mt
erase' before using the tape.
