I did some more testing on a pristine FreeBSD 10.3 amd64 installation.

Right after bootup:

# kldload i915kms ==> hard freeze

I did a hard-reset and added the following to loader.conf, as suggested
by the handbook in the X.org chapter:

kern.vty=vt

I rebooted and gave it another try:

# kldload i915kms ==> hard freeze, again

Hmmm.
