Possibly that needs gnome running, too.  evince doesn't see it.  Well, 
to be more precise:

As usual, evince comes up showing the page correctly.  A print preview 
shows the letter-sized page will be printed on A4.  File/Print Setup 
shows the document is already US Letter.  However, that paper size will 
not be used until you click Apply.
