(At least that I know of) It is something I'm interested in working on and the microwindows/nanoGUI looks promising, but I'm at least 2 months away from putting any serious time into it. As one the of the directions we now looking into PC104 or CPCI systems. Does anyone know serial cards in these factors with at least 8 ports, preferred more, RJ45. Special connectors could be dealth with (Front panel which breaks out to RJ45). To describe the whole problem: So far we used Remote Annex 2000, 4000 and Bay Chassis 5000 with 5399 (24 port) as consoles in our colocations. The Bay Chassis 5000 means 13 x 24 ports (312) in about 14U rackmount space. Bay stopped producing these, because Intel stopped making the cpus Xylogic/Bay were using in these. We looked at things like PCI multiport cards, but they are all a cludge in the form they daisy chain. Many products are not rackmountable or have no FreeBSD drivers. We looked at products like Digi Etherlite32, which works fine for sending data from it to the attached serial device, but not for return traffic (it locks up the ports). The features we kinda look for is: High density or in a good form distributed. a FreeBSD platform would be nice, so we can run things like conserver and have a backlog of console messages. I was quite happy with my 486 DX-2 66 + 16 (later 20 and later 32) MB of memory + emacs. Well, happy until I went to do a make world, and then it was a 8 hours (later 12 and most recently 36 hour, but that was with NFS src and NFS obj) affair. PicoBSD isn't particularly relevant. You want in your kernel configuration: options BOOTP # Use BOOTP to obtain IP address/hostname options BOOTP_NFSROOT # NFS mount root filesystem using BOOTP info You then load this kernel, either with a boot rom (eg. ports/net/etherboot) or from floppy with the normal loader. You then need to configure your bootp or dhcp server to supply the cryptic options that specify the root and swap, and provide suitable configuration in the /etc of the root that you mount (you _can_ export the root of one of your diskful machines to be used as the discless root, but it makes the configuration more complex: easier to take a copy somewhere and export that - which can be shared between all your discless machines). There's some stuff in the handbook and elsewhere about this - the main problem is not finding a scheme that will work, more of chosing between several different but largely equivalent ways of doing it. When you're putting together a product your business model has you practically giving away as a loss leader, you make it as cheap as possible. Which means using commodity parts. Which means Tiwanese PC parts. The motherboard is a PC, complete with a PC BIOS. They aren't going to change that. They already scrambled the pinouts on the IDE connector, so a plain Radio Shack cable won't work. But the pinouts are known, and a cable that works can be had for under $20. Or, construct your own. The SanDisk flash memory device they're using looks like an IDE drive, so it would be hard for them to eliminate the ability to add a drive, without major re-engineering. And that would cost more money than they're losing to a few hackers. Most likely they'll remove the header. But, hey, I can solder. I made no such comittment. That being said, I'm willing to run for a month or two. I'll invest $44 to find out more about that market segment and how they intend to serve it. I'll probably put it in my Mother-in-Law's house to see how someone closer to their intended audience reacts to the whole thing. I can use it for a door stop. I can throw it in the pool. I can smash it into pieces. Or, I can use it for a cute, cheap X terminal. My choice, not theirs. They made a stupid business decision, based on ignorance and/or arrogance. Hell, if I just parted them out, I'd be ahead. You can't buy an 800x600 color LCD panel for $99. The proper business model is clear, and has been in use for several years in the cell phone business. Give away the phone, but only with a several year commitment to the service. If you won't commit, you have to buy the phone. Fair enough. I bought my Motorola StarTac outright so that I could change services every month if I felt like it (and as the service providers fight to give away ever more "free" minutes, that's proved worthwhile). So slip me an I-Opener for $49 with a 2 year committment. Charge me $400 for just the gizmo. Fair to everyone. Instead, they went with King Gillette's "give 'em the razor, sell 'em the blades" plan. I should have looked earlier and pointed Omachonu at the "custom" target. I see he looked at it and made a fix, which was due to the change of a kernel option. I assume this means he found no other problem with it. There's no reason (apart from time) why we shouldn't adapt the Makefile-based build to the other targets. This seems a much better way to go than to maintain the old build scripts, which aren't really BSD-like. Yeah, I agree (for the long term) Still, it is nice to have the others working again until such time as the framework issues are worked out; I've got a few folks back in Atlanta using the "dial" variant for some important work and they are happy to be building it again today. I certainly wouldn't be opposed to ripping out the broken variants in favor of custom or anything else that might help progress. I believe that having a more BSD-like build environment will help with future non-X86 PicoBSD's as well.
