Please help me! I'll try to make this brief. During booting of FreeBSD, when the root filesystem is mounted, the kernel complains of read errors, and I *THINK* drops disk access to a much slower mode of operation. Why is this and how can I fix it. I *PERCEIVE* disk access on my machine as rather slow and disappointing. I boot from a UDMA100 EIDE hard disk (master) on the primary EIDE controller using booteasy. F5 allows me to boot FreeBSD on the master UDMA100 disk on my second EIDE controller (Winblowz-2k is on the master drive on the primary EIDE). Here's a snippet from dmesg.boot: ... ppi0: <Parallel I/O> on ppbus0 plip0: <PLIP network interface> on ppbus0 unknown: <PNP0401> can't assign resources unknown: <PNP0501> can't assign resources unknown: <PNP0501> can't assign resources unknown: <PNP0700> can't assign resources unknown: <PNP0f13> can't assign resources unknown: <PNP0c01> can't assign resources unknown: <PNP0000> can't assign resources unknown: <PNP0303> can't assign resources ad0: 38166MB <WDC WD400BB-00CXA0> [77545/16/63] at ata0-master UDMA100 ad2: 19092MB <WDC WD200BB-00CJA0> [38792/16/63] at ata1-master UDMA100 ata1-slave: timeout waiting for cmd=ef s=00 e=00 acd0: CDROM <Pioneer CD-ROM ATAPI Model DR-A24X 0104> at ata1-slave BIOSPIO Waiting 15 seconds for SCSI devices to settle sa0 at ahc0 bus 0 target 1 lun 0 sa0: <HP C1533A AN04> Removable Sequential Access SCSI-2 device sa0: 6.756MB/s transfers (6.756MHz, offset 15) Mounting root from ufs:/dev/ad2s1a ad2s1a: UDMA ICRC error reading fsbn 255 of 96-127 (ad2s1 bn 255; cn 0 tn 4 sn 3) retrying ad2s1a: UDMA ICRC error reading fsbn 255 of 96-127 (ad2s1 bn 255; cn 0 tn 4 sn 3) retrying ad2s1a: UDMA ICRC error reading fsbn 255 of 96-127 (ad2s1 bn 255; cn 0 tn 4 sn 3) retrying ad2s1a: UDMA ICRC error reading fsbn 255 of 96-127 (ad2s1 bn 255; cn 0 tn 4 sn 3) falling back to PIO mode [end of dmesg.boot] ...what does all this mean? How to fix? TIA :-) -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ William Blair Wagner : Education is not always knowing the answer, blairw@icarz.com : ...but rather knowing where to look for it! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message
