i was under the wrong impression that i had seen a cvs commit
message, related to mozilla port, which documented the
fix/workaround.  as it would turn out later that that fix did not
work.

installing freetype-1.3.1_2 did fix the problem...

...so did deinstalling freetype-1.3.1_1 port.
