I just tried # apm -r 10; zzz which suspended the machine (I assume in the same way that Fn+Esc suspends it). It resumed after 10 seconds, as it should have done, the screen came back to the X session, but it had locked solid. No mouse cursor, no response from the Caps/Num Lock LEDs, no results when I tried to move back to a different virtual terminal, and I couldn't ping the machine.
