Hotmail provides some sort of totally proprietary, unpublished HTTP interface to its mail system, which Outlook Express understands. It's hokey and slow and not very flexible, but that's all there is. I suppose Hotmail wants to force you to see advertisements or something when accessing the servers (otherwise, since Hotmail is free, it's hard to see how they would generate any revenue).
