Did you install the des distribution?

If not then you are in a pickle  :(  You have to install DES then rebuild 
the passwords from MD5 to DES.  2.1.5 is amorphic if I remember correctly 
and thus won't have that problem.

Are you sure you don't want -lcrypt instead of -ldes?
