Personally, I'd like nothing better than that those ports which use the dialog stuff check for a 'Makefile.local' and then don't pause for input, display a dialog or anything, because the user already went to the trouble of reading the Makefile, decided what they wanted, typed it into a file, and then got fed up with the port when they kicked off a long portupgrade run, came back and found it sitting there waiting for input.
