Ok. Let's start with a baseline. Can you do the following (in the conf dir):

 cp /kernel.GENERIC /kernel.GENERIC.save
 config GENERIC
 cd ../../compile/GENERIC
 make depend && make && make install
 reboot

and have the GENERIC kernel you just rebuilt come up and work? If so, I
suggest taking that config file and just tweaking it to add support for the
devices you need and taking slowly taking away things you don't need.
