If I'm not mistaken I don't think the installation DVD actually contains
any software other than base. It does include the ports tree, but I
don't think it contains any distfiles.

I would recommend just using portsnap or svn if you want to use ports
rather than packages as the ports tree on the DVD can be rather old. The
handbook page you linked is very good information.
