I also have related problems following the latest upgrade. There are no plasma 
applets installed on the system (Freebsd 7.2 p3)

KDE now loads with a splash screen including the following:

"kwin Window Manager
Desktop effects were too slow and have been suspended.
If this was a temporary problem, you can resule using the 'Alt+Shift+F12' 
shortcut. You can disable functionality checks in System Settings (on the 
advanced tab in Desktop Effects)."

Now comes the serious bit.

After ending the session and then attempting to login again the system 
crashes.
