The "Backup Basics" chapter of the FreeBSD Handbook covers a lot of the tradeoffs. One tradeoff that chapter doesn't touch on is data confidentiality issues with backups. If your needs require offsite and/or offline backups (and most do, at least in my opinion), you may need encryption. Which can't be automated (although it doesn't necessarily have to happen at the same time the backup is made). This is why so many businesses use outside services for offsite backup -- it lets them depend on physical security instead of having to keep encryption keys secure.
