I used to get this with SMP and a usb disk connected (and/or other usb
devices).  I endedup compiling USB out of the kernel and now its happy. 
If it hangs later on in boot with USB compiled out then add:
moused_enable="NO"
to rc.conf.
If there is a legacy USB setting in the bios you may need to change that
as well to not do legacy mode.
