The quality and completeness of the FreeBSD docs is unparalleled in Linux. We feel that a "Slackware Handbook" would be very useful to many people. We have a wiki-like setup that will ease the burden of administration and allow the community to moderate the content. What would also help is to be able to copy sections of the FreeBSD handbook that are the same on Slackware. It is our understanding that the FreeBSD documentation is under a BSD-like license that allows copying and modification if the copyright is retained. These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. See http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/LEGALNOTICE.h= tml for more information. So, as long as you honor the license, there's no problem in copying sections and adapting them to Slackware (e.g. the DragonFly BSD guys have done the same, http://leaf.dragonflybsd.org/~justin/handbook/). Many sections have a 'Contributed by...' text on top, would be nice if you'd keep them (although it's not required by the license). Personally, I'd like the "Contributed by ..." to stay for sections which have them. Having those sections shown to a wider audiance would help with spelling/grammar/correction fixes and the person(s) responsible would be easier to find by contributors who may want to submit patches. I'm very much in favor of this and would like to raise my hand in show of support. If no one else makes any comments then I think you're good to go since there has been more than enough time for support or objections to have been made. Thanks! Slackware is the most BSD-like of the Linux distributions out there. For that reason and many others it has been my favorite since forever. It _was_ the first Linux distribution I ever installed too :-) Having said that, I think that the distribution terms of the FreeBSD documentation, as stated in our online versions of the web site and the docs *do* allow Slackware folks to use parts of the documentation. This is definitely something that may benefit both sides: - More eyes will look at the FreeBSD docs, possibly submitting fixes and/or additions. - The Slackware Handbook will have lots of material to start with, which usually serves as a good motive for more people to get involved early. - If the Slackware Handbook uses a "compatible" set of distribution terms, we may even import back some of the material Linux people write in our own Handbook. This sounds definitely good :-) Giorgos From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jan 26 00:20:25 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8DC1D16A4CE for ; Wed, 26 Jan 2005 00:20:25 +0000 (GMT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5454343D49 for ; Wed, 26 Jan 2005 00:20:25 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id j0Q0KPF8035375 for ; Wed, 26 Jan 2005 00:20:25 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1/Submit) id j0Q0KPwK035374; Wed, 26 Jan 2005 00:20:25 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2005 00:20:25 GMT Resent-Message-Id: <200501260020.j0Q0KPwK035374@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, Florent Thoumie Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 88C1F16A4CE for ; Wed, 26 Jan 2005 00:13:56 +0000 (GMT) Received: from gate.xbsd.org (xbsd.org [82.233.2.192]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D248F43D1F for ; Wed, 26 Jan 2005 00:13:55 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from flz@xbsd.org) Received: from localhost (localhost.xbsd.org [127.0.0.1]) by gate.xbsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3D8EE119C7 for ; Wed, 26 Jan 2005 01:14:32 +0100 (CET) Received: from gate.xbsd.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (gate.xbsd.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 84516-01 for ; Wed, 26 Jan 2005 01:14:26 +0100 (CET) Received: by gate.xbsd.org (Postfix, from userid 2001) id D3C0B116DC; Wed, 26 Jan 2005 01:14:25 +0100 (CET) Message-Id: <20050126001425.D3C0B116DC@gate.xbsd.org> Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2005 01:14:25 +0100 (CET) From: Florent Thoumie To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: 3.113 Subject: docs/76688: Update doc: books/porters-handbook - tell about SUB_{FILES,LIST} X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: Florent Thoumie List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2005 00:20:25 -0000 >Number: 76688 >Category: docs >Synopsis: Update doc: books/porters-handbook - tell about SUB_{FILES,LIST} >Confidential: no >Severity: non-critical >Priority: low >Responsible: freebsd-doc >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: change-request >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Wed Jan 26 00:20:24 GMT 2005 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: Florent Thoumie >Release: FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE i386 >Organization: Xbsd.org >Environment: System: FreeBSD gate.xbsd.org 5.3-RELEASE FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE #2: Wed Nov 24 16:35:34 CET 2004 root@gate.xbsd.org:/usr/src/sys/i386/compile/GATE i386 >Description: Add some piece of information about SUB_FILES and SUB_LIST variables. >How-To-Repeat: N/A >Fix: --- subfiles.diff begins here --- --- book.sgml.orig Wed Jan 26 00:15:04 2005 +++ book.sgml Wed Jan 26 01:07:06 2005 @@ -5377,6 +5377,56 @@ installed in /var/db/pkg upon install from a port. + + + Making use of <makevar>SUB_FILES</makevar> and + <makevar>SUB_LIST</makevar> + + If your port wants to modify some of your files (that means not + included in the original distribution) according to some values, you + can use SUB_FILES and SUB_LIST + variables. + + SUB_FILES specifies a list of files to be + automatically modified. I'm not part of the doc team and it looks like this is going to happen anyway, but thank you very much for doing this. I use Slackware when I'm not using FreeBSD, and the only thing I've found lacking in my favorite Linux distro was documentation (aside from the usual, man pages and so forth). Maybe I wouldn't have noticed if FreeBSD's Handbook weren't so good ;) Honestly, though, good documentation is an absolute godsend in the open source world, and it makes learning new software that much easier, especially an OS, and it becomes an invaluable reference for anyone who uses it. This would be a great benefit to both parties, as many people have said. As you've said, you've picked the best possible *nix doc base, which is fantastic. So the correction is not 100% true. 5.3 was the first *release* with PF included. 5.2.1, 5.1 and 5.0(not sure)= =20 can be supported from security/pf. One should note, that the port is=20 outdated (OpenBSD 3.4) and no longer maintained. I'll remove the port with= =20 the release of 5.4 (and will correct the firewall chapter accordingly). 4.= x=20 can get pf from KAME snapshots, btw. =2D-=20 /"\ Best regards, | mlaier@freebsd.org \ / Max Laier | ICQ #67774661 X http://pf4freebsd.love2party.net/ | mlaier@EFnet / \ ASCII Ribbon Campaign | Against HTML Mail and News --nextPart1419845.TaNjQOCS7x Content-Type: application/pgp-signature -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.0 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQBB+OlnXyyEoT62BG0RAv4BAJ9gHfVi8DwR4Xbyzw2DQdAFmZUQTACePDBL IhGZD0qf1IKO3i3/OlS1xkg= =0lA5 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --nextPart1419845.TaNjQOCS7x-- From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jan 27 13:50:21 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 123DF16A4CE for ; Thu, 27 Jan 2005 13:50:21 +0000 (GMT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CA25643D49 for ; Thu, 27 Jan 2005 13:50:20 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id j0RDoKou067878 for ; Thu, 27 Jan 2005 13:50:20 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1/Submit) id j0RDoKtj067877; Thu, 27 Jan 2005 13:50:20 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Thu, 27 Jan 2005 13:50:20 GMT Message-Id: <200501271350.j0RDoKtj067877@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org From: Giorgos Keramidas Subject: Re: docs/76750: Fix wording about what version of FreeBSD PF can be used in. Thanks for the very informative reply Max :-) What is, in your opinion, the best thing to do? Currently, the text of the Handbook reads: % 24.4 The Packet Filter (PF) Firewall % % As of July 2003 the OpenBSD firewall software application known % as PF was ported to FreeBSD and was made available in the FreeBSD % ports collection; the first release that contained PF as an % integrated part of the base system was FreeBSD 5.3 in November % 2004. [...] % % For older 5.X version of FreeBSD you can find PF in the FreeBSD % ports collection here: security/pf. If I am reading your reply correctly, we don't need to change anything; the Handbook text describes correctly PF as part of the base system after 5.3-RELEASE and points everyone else to the port. The only thing that could probably be added is "4.x can get pf from KAME snapshots". - Giorgos From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jan 27 15:28:43 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 79B9216A4CE; Thu, 27 Jan 2005 15:28:43 +0000 (GMT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4FB9443D53; Thu, 27 Jan 2005 15:28:43 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from keramida@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (keramida@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id j0RFShsA079207; Thu, 27 Jan 2005 15:28:43 GMT (envelope-from keramida@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from keramida@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1/Submit) id j0RFSh0j079203; Thu, 27 Jan 2005 15:28:43 GMT (envelope-from keramida) Date: Thu, 27 Jan 2005 15:28:43 GMT From: Giorgos Keramidas Message-Id: <200501271528.j0RFSh0j079203@freefall.freebsd.org> To: so14k@so14k.com, keramida@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org, keramida@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: docs/76750: Fix wording about what version of FreeBSD PF can be used in.
