Ralf Engelschall wrote a paper how to fine tune FreeBSD kernel for high performance load sharing webservers ... Certainly there are things that could be tuned when using databases. Did you already ask on the mysql mailinglist, what they recommend to fine tune to increase performance in general for mysql ? Perhaps they already have some experience with FreeBSD ? Already searched the archives (www.google.com) ? I looked for: mysql performance tuning And got some links: http://www.tryc.on.ca/archives/mysql/December1999/0009.html What disks are you using SCSI or IDE ? What driver settings in the kernel ... Some kernel options might give a difference. Maybe the Linux machines have some performance knobs turned on, in certain areas FreeBSD is more restrictive in turning on such knobs per default, with the sake to support more (crappy) hardware.
