Ahhh.  Figured out what it was.
I had run the make and piped it into tee to have a hard copy of the log.
Apparently something about the pipe screws up the input.
The log is full of vty escape sequences, obviously from the screen
painting.

Seems like this is a bug of sorts.
Not sure the screen painting should go to the log,
and the keyboard problem is obviously a problem.
