Same symptoms...

I'm going to get another IDE controller rsn, put one of my hd's on it, and
see if that helps any.  <crosses fingers>

I tried playing with the kernel, but the farthest I got was to get the
kernel to put processes waiting for the other disk in uninterruptible
sleep :-/ (i guess it's a bit better than freezing at least :-))
