Because that needlessly involves us in politics.  Its not necessary that
the ports system dictate an implementation; look at the differences b/t
the NetBSD tools and the FreeBSD tools.  I'd imagine that there would be a
high degree of sharing but in the beginning we want to avoid taking the
position of 'dictator'.

The ports system is really about managing patches and metadata (versions,
dependencies etc.)

Indeed.  There are quite a few obvious areas for working on cross project
cooperation.
