I forgot to mention:

The gateway machine is connected to @home  via a cable modem and
DHCP.

The windows machine setup is very simple.

IP: 192.168.0.2
Gateway: 192.168.0.1

WINS: disabled
DNS: disabled

The W98 machine will connect directly to @home. So, NIC works.
