Just to follow up, usbd seems to be causing the panics.. Without it
running, i get some action from the printer (warms up and gets ready to
print) followed by this message from apsfilter's test print:

Printing test page...
-rw------- 1 root wheel 1508497 Jun 19 19:28 /aps_testout.VW8581
eval: cannot create /dev/ulpt0: error 16

What might error 16 be?

Seems as though some control is being sent along the wire, but the data
just isnt getting there.. any ideas?
