I don't think you will get better performance from 5.0, more likely
worse.  That being said I think the chances are good that if you install
5.0 it will run just fine.

I'm running 5.0 on a dual 800Mhz P3 and it has been runing very well.

I just run a GENERIC+SMP kernel..
