I think that python is a great learning language. I would certainly be =
teaching it to people as the first language to help build concepts.

However, FreeBSD, contains mono. Mono is avaliable on Linux and OSX, but =
it is on windows natively as .NET. You can easily create some great C# =
applications that would be cross platform using this tool.=20

Finally, the best cross platform tool is a web service. So perhaps you =
should explore the Django or Ruby on Rails path?
