you want a book, get "The Design and Implementation of the 4.4BSD
Operating System (Unix and Open Systems Series.)" amazon has it bundled
with "UNIX Internals: The New Frontiers" for $126.62.

you'll learn the most from reading the source code and the archives from
the -hackers mailing list.

consider reading the VM system article (this document is past marvelous,
it's phenominal) at
