Tried again with the following results;

A dialog box dislplaying the following,

Unable to mount Audio Disc

DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a 
reply (timeout by message bus)

and

$ cat /dev/sndstat
FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm: 64bit 2009061500/amd64)
Installed devices:
pcm0: <HDA Sigmatel STAC9205X PCM #0 Analog> (play/rec) default

$ mixer
Mixer vol      is currently set to 100:100
Mixer pcm      is currently set to  75:75
Mixer speaker  is currently set to  75:75
Mixer rec      is currently set to  75:75
Recording source: monitor

no sound and no drive activity.
