Remove the batteries for a quick'n'hard shutdown. (Provided they can be removed, but I don't think I've ever seen a laptop where they can't). Eivind, who has had the same problem on a Mac - the DEMO PROGRAM supplied by Apple hung the box this hard; no changes from default install.
