I'm running Java just fine with the native version of Netscape 3.0 (that is
i386-unknown-bsd version). If you can't get that to run Java, look in the
archives, there were few discussions on this issue about a month or two ago.

It boils down to:
Install Netscape 3.0 from the port, read the README and do as it says, and if
your applet seem to run but don't show (you get a blank rectangle where the
applet should be) then try remaking the fonts directories for X86
