You don't say whether it's a parallel port version or a SCSI version.
I'm running a SCSI ZIP drive, no problems at all.

Yes, FreeBSD has the automount daemon -- look for `amd'.  I don't
think you need it to use the ZIP drive.  Your friend is probably just
recommending it as a convenience.
