Here's a little more info.
I tried booting -cv and got the following:
Calibrating clock(s)...
i586 clock:4289856045Hz, i8254 clock: 1048233 Hz
1048233Hz differs from default of 1193182 Hz by more than 1%

THEN the system hangs.
