I want to test drive a FreeBSD install on a spare disk I have on the Ultra 60. Much earlier I had made a devalias in nvram for cdrom and this has worked for booting such things as the sparc64 Gentoo CD. Somehow boot-file in openprom was set to 'cprboot -F' - which was there before I had the machine. openprom with a Linux CDROM normally just complained about there being nothing after -F and then ignored boot-file. I've tried 'setenv boot-file bsd' or boot/boot0 and various attempts to set it to null, but I still cannot boot the FreeBSD boot only CDROM. Perhaps really nulling boot-file would help but single and double quoted null or no value have not worked. So far no solutions found with google and nothing about it in the BSD release notes, handbook, etc., so if anyone can suggest something to try it would be great... --Donald Teed [image: Edit/Delete Message] From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Nov 15 11:02:13 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9AF0C16A41F for ; Tue, 15 Nov 2005 11:02:13 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from reko.turja@liukuma.net) Received: from www.liukuma.net (www.liukuma.net [62.220.235.15]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3EF8243D45 for ; Tue, 15 Nov 2005 11:02:12 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from reko.turja@liukuma.net) Received: from L02C84001 (unknown [195.148.43.230]) (using TLSv1 with cipher RC4-MD5 (128/128 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by www.liukuma.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id 674AD579A; Tue, 15 Nov 2005 13:02:09 +0200 (EET) Message-ID: <00d801c5e9d4$07549750$fa2a13ac@STAFF.AMK.LOCAL> From: "Reko Turja" To: "Donald Teed" , References: Date: Tue, 15 Nov 2005 13:02:08 +0200 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2670 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.2670 Cc: Subject: Re: failing to boot FreeBSD cdrom - openprom settings? It's probably a good idea to start with a new kernel config file based on GENERIC in FreeBSD 6 as lots of the console and tty driver related stuff has changed on sparc64 between FreeBSD 5 and 6. Also make sure to update /etc/ttys accordingly. Marius -- This mail was scanned by AntiVir Milter. This product is licensed for non-commercial use. See www.antivir.de for details. I have a Sun Ultra 10 with Mach64 graphics chip, so I can't help with the Creator 3D problems. FWIW I have the dri module commented out of my xorg.conf. I have the same keyboard as you and exactly the same InputDevice section as you posted earlier. The keyboard works, although I don't get any caps/num/scroll lock LEDs in xorg. - steve From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Nov 17 11:53:29 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 65B1616A41F for ; Thu, 17 Nov 2005 11:53:29 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from marius@newtrinity.zeist.de) Received: from newtrinity.zeist.de (newtrinity.zeist.de [217.24.217.8]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C34A843D45 for ; Thu, 17 Nov 2005 11:53:28 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from marius@newtrinity.zeist.de) Received: from newtrinity.zeist.de (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by newtrinity.zeist.de (8.12.11/8.12.11/ZEIST.DE) with ESMTP id jAHBrQLX082059; Thu, 17 Nov 2005 12:53:27 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from marius@newtrinity.zeist.de) Received: (from marius@localhost) by newtrinity.zeist.de (8.12.11/8.12.10/Submit) id jAHBrLuT082057; Thu, 17 Nov 2005 12:53:21 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from marius) Date: Thu, 17 Nov 2005 12:53:21 +0100 From: Marius Strobl To: Ken Folse Message-ID: <20051117125321.A81327@newtrinity.zeist.de> References: <000e01c5eb5c$8bac7160$6401a8c0@eclipse> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.2.5.1i In-Reply-To: <000e01c5eb5c$8bac7160$6401a8c0@eclipse>; from ksfjr@sbcglobal.net on Thu, Nov 17, 2005 at 03:51:51AM -0600 X-AntiVirus-modified: yes X-AntiVirus: checked by AntiVir Milter (version: 1.1.1-9; AVE: 6.32.0.58; VDF: 6.32.0.188; host: newtrinity.zeist.de) Cc: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Ultra Enterprise 2, Creator3D, type6, Xorg issues X-BeenThere: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Sparc List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 17 Nov 2005 11:53:29 -0000 On Thu, Nov 17, 2005 at 03:51:51AM -0600, Ken Folse wrote: > > Ok, I have compiled a custom kernel and reinstalled xorg from ports. Which ones are you trying to use? Window managers known working on sparc64 are twm and windowmaker. No idea about what display managers work, I've only started X via startx(1) so far. > Should I upgrade to -CURRENT? That's unlikely to make a difference; the device drivers relevant for the X server like creator(4), sunkbd(4), etc. are still in sync between -CURRENT and 6.0. It also doesn't sound like you'd have a problem with one of those. Marius -- This mail was scanned by AntiVir Milter. This product is licensed for non-commercial use. See www.antivir.de for details. This is all using the same xorg.conf. When I use startx now, it loads all the way up into fluxbox. However, I can't use the mouse. When I use xdm now, it loads into the login screen. Again, I can't use = the mouse but the keyboard does work. I can log in and a window manager (twm = I think) starts to load (not sure which one). I think the xterm window = loads but the mouse is trying to drag it (the window is wire frame). The mouse does not work at all. I have to Control+Alt+Backspace out several times = to shut it down. I'm using a crossbow mouse. I know this mouse works as I have used it in Solaris and NetBSD. Since I hazard to guess that this would take a considerable amount of time (to put it mildly) when built on this machine, I decided to cross-build it on my main i386 machine. make buildworld TARGET_ARCH=sparc64 went fine. After that, I (naivetely) nfs-mounted /usr/src und /usr/obj from the i386 machine, but the installworld target failed because the install toolchain (/usr/obj/usr/src/tmp/legacy/usr) are i386 binaries (which makes sense). Can I nfs-mount the / and /usr filesystems from the Sun on my i386 machine and then do an 'installworld DESTDIR=/mountpoint TARGET_ARCH=sparc64'? Is there a recommended method (read: documented) for doing this?
