Subject:   Q: How to control /dev/dsp

anyone know how to put /dev/dsp on freebsd 2.2.5 into a certain mode,
say, sample at 44.1khz/16bit?  and the followup question is: once i
succeed in doing this, what format will the output be?
unsigned/signed, etc.

my goal is to put /dev/dsp into this mode and then figure out the
right command line options to get sox to convert data on /dev/dsp to a
wav.

here's some potentially relevant info:
