How should we handle differences? Something like:

os=`sysctl -n kern.ostype`

case ${os} in
	FreeBSD)
		# Stuff for FreeBSD
		;;
	NetBSD)
		# Stuff for NetBSD
seac

would do the job. Remember, uname isn't always accessible.
