Sobral" Sender: owner-freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org The following reply was made to PR i386/10295; it has been noted by GNATS. From: "Daniel C. Sobral" To: jan@janot.if.sc.usp.br Cc: freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: i386/10295: Version 3.0 and 3.1 have incompatible kernel load procedures Date: Sun, 28 Feb 1999 10:03:20 +0900 This is not changable. The former kernel loader was not capable of loading Elf kernels. Thus, you must install a new kernel loader. Incidentally, the kernel load procedures *did* change. A number of reasons exist for that. No further progress could be made with what we had. To solve your problem, enter 1:wd(1,a)/boot/loader (or just /boot/loader, if that works for you) to load the new third stage loader, which will then proceed to boot the kernel. Then issue the command "disklabel -B wd1" to install the new boot blocks on wd1. If new problems arise, you can contact me. jan@janot.if.sc.usp.br wrote: > > >Number: 10295 > >Category: i386 > >Synopsis: Version 3.0 and 3.1 have incompatible kernel load procedures > >Confidential: no > >Severity: non-critical > >Priority: low > >Responsible: freebsd-bugs > >State: open > >Quarter: > >Keywords: > >Date-Required: > >Class: change-request > >Submitter-Id: current-users > >Arrival-Date: Sat Feb 27 16:30:00 PST 1999 > >Closed-Date: > >Last-Modified: > >Originator: Jan Slaets > >Release: 3.1-RELEASE > >Organization: > University Sao Paulo (Brazil) > >Environment: > Not available yet, since I can not boot my new 3.1 OS. > >Description: > Issuing the command 1:wd(1,a)kernel on (previous) FreeBSD bootmanagers > or bootfloppy (version 3.0) fails loading a 3.1 kernel, but loads the > 2.2.1 or 3.0 kernel on second IDE controllers. > >How-To-Repeat: > > >Fix: > > >Release-Note: > >Audit-Trail: > >Unformatted: > > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org > with "unsubscribe freebsd-bugs" in the body of the message -- Daniel C.
