IIRC, ntpd should not cause large-scale changes to the time that might wreak havoc with your router. It should only be making changes in the rate at which the clock ticks, so as to speed it up or slow it down, to the point where you are more or less in sync with your reference(s). It would be ntpdate that would be the potentially dangerous one making large-scale changes to your system time.
