Better, but still not a solution since I need ssh-access to do this remotely (no iLO/IPMI/KVM exists). 3) A normal upgrade+reboot, followed by 'shutdown -ron now' (to prevent filesystem cache from being flushed) always make my machine reboot immediately as it should. However, this too is not a perfect workaround since the filesystem gets corrupted. Given these three scenarios, and because they are reproduceable every time, I hope a soluction will be found soon. FreeBSD 10.0 is now unsupported so us FreeBSD users need to upgrade all our machines.
