 Interesting, I do this regularly. What command are you using to save
 to the tape/get from the tape?

 One thing that might help is to use a known blocksize. Some unixs
 have different ideas about blocksize.
 
 Also somthing to look at is byte swapping. you can use dd to get
 around this problem with the swab command.
