You might want to try this font browser; it does not have this problem:
  xfontbrowser-1.0 -- Simple Font Browser

Which .gsf file in particular?  I've picked up a lot of type 1 fonts, but
I don't know enough about the terminology to interpret what you mean by
``Gothic type fonts''.  ``Old English'' style?  German?
