Here's more info.  I tried fdisk manually, and get this:

su-2.04# fdisk -BI da4
******* Working on device /dev/da4 *******
fdisk: invalid fdisk partition table found

Does this mean I'll have to go in and low-level format all these 
drives?  Or is there another way to correct this.
