Next time you start KDE (after freshly rebooting the system or proceeding from a setup where you know sound works properly), open a console login somewhere and run the mixer command. Note its output: what are the values for the various devices? I've seen that, after starting KDE 3.3, all of my mixer devices are set to 0 -- thus muted. They're not broken; you just need to manually reset them. The two important ones (at least with the sound cards that I've used on FreeBSD) are mixer and pcm, though cd may be important if you have your CD-ROM drive hooked up to your sound card, but I don't know for sure as I've never used that configuration. On my machine, with my Creative SBLive! PCI sound card (as supported by snd_emu10k1), here are the default, working settings: Mixer vol is currently set to 75:75 Mixer pcm is currently set to 75:75 Mixer speaker is currently set to 75:75 Mixer line is currently set to 0:0 Mixer mic is currently set to 0:0 Mixer cd is currently set to 75:75 Mixer rec is currently set to 0:0 Mixer ogain is currently set to 75:75 Mixer line1 is currently set to 0:0 Mixer phin is currently set to 0:0 Mixer phout is currently set to 0:0 Mixer video is currently set to 75:75 Note that, as the manual for mixer states, not all devices may be present in your configuration, and you may have more devices than I list here. --=-U4R048pJW8hBsVx8WtqR Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name=signature.asc Content-Description: This is a digitally signed message part -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.6 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQBBVi3pk/lo7zvzJioRAoGNAKC1ZAnp4h5W9xEs7aGHkGpHhQsSIgCgoqd8 iyqOAmeKoLdp69L3025YeUE= =Xhkf -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --=-U4R048pJW8hBsVx8WtqR-- From owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Sep 26 03:07:00 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2CF8916A5AB for ; Sun, 26 Sep 2004 03:07:00 +0000 (GMT) Received: from o2.hostbaby.com (o2.hostbaby.com [208.187.29.121]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id CD64643D2D for ; Sun, 26 Sep 2004 03:06:59 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from ceo@l-i-e.com) Received: (qmail 98369 invoked by uid 1001); 26 Sep 2004 03:07:04 -0000 Received: from 24.148.51.115 (SquirrelMail authenticated user ceo@l-i-e.com); by www.l-i-e.com with HTTP; Sat, 25 Sep 2004 20:07:04 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: <3518.24.148.51.115.1096168024.squirrel@www.l-i-e.com> In-Reply-To: <00a001c4a1de$51e636f0$4c22fea9@winxp> References: <00e901c4a0c9$26e810b0$4c22fea9@winxp><200409221901.17579.steve@howes-macnaghten.com> <008601c4a195$1a3163e0$4c22fea9@winxp> <00a001c4a1de$51e636f0$4c22fea9@winxp> Date: Sat, 25 Sep 2004 20:07:04 -0700 (PDT) From: "Richard Lynch" To: "kinux" User-Agent: Hostbaby Webmail X-Mailer: Hostbaby Webmail MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain;charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Importance: Normal cc: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Subject: Re: snort+mysql+acid X-BeenThere: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: ceo@l-i-e.com List-Id: User questions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 26 Sep 2004 03:07:00 -0000 kinux wrote: > Fatal error: Call to undefined function: preg_replace() in > /usr/local/www/acid/acid_signature.inc on line 194 You have managed to install PHP *without* the PCRE module (module of PHP). http://php.net/pcre should lead you to something useful about how/where to get PCRE. Not sure how that translates into FreeBSD ports system, however. You can check what PHP modules are installed by creating a PHP file in your web server with (only) this in it: I *thought* the PCRE module was built-in to PHP -- at least after 4.0 anyway... Check your version of PHP in that output -- You may have managed to install it twice, and are somehow using an "old" PHP version with snort/mysql/acid... Also try "php -v" on the command line as the Snort user (or whatever user[s] seem appropriate). -- Like Music? http://l-i-e.com/artists.htm From owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Sep 26 03:16:13 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BB07916A4CE for ; Sun, 26 Sep 2004 03:16:13 +0000 (GMT) Received: from web54104.mail.yahoo.com (web54104.mail.yahoo.com [206.190.37.239]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 7C6DA43D41 for ; Sun, 26 Sep 2004 03:16:13 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from saigon_ca@yahoo.com) Message-ID: <20040926031613.61998.qmail@web54104.mail.yahoo.com> Received: from [64.231.182.211] by web54104.mail.yahoo.com via HTTP; Sun, 26 Sep 2004 11:16:13 CST Date: Sun, 26 Sep 2004 11:16:13 +0800 (CST) From: Kangaroo To: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Subject: ps2 moused freezing while accessing Qonquor. I am running 5.2.1-RELEASE on a Pentium 3. The PC has an integrated parallel port that works fine, but I am trying to add a new ISA parallel port card that worked fine on my RedHat 7.2 box. In RedHat I could cat /proc/dma, /proc/ioports and /proc/interrupts to get a list of resources that are not in use, but I'm not sure how to get the same information from BSD. I found vmstat -i for interrupts, but how do I get the data for io ports and dma channels? My /boot/device.hints file has 2 entries for ppc: hint.ppc.0.at="isa" hint.ppc.0.irq="7" Would I need to specify DMA or io port for the new card which I think would be ppc.1 Thanks! A slightly different take on this: Unless you're *REALLY* poor/underpaid, the time you would spend making a "safe" way for your friend to poke at a production box to learn would be a lot more expensive than a cheap-o eBay computer... Just for the record: Unless the FreeBSD port does something really really really bogus, the above statement is 100% wrong. :-) Perhaps you are thinking of Perl CGI versus Mod_Perl (sp?) where such a distinction (I think) does exist. PHP as CGI and PHP as Module have very minor differences, primarily related to functions/security that would make no sense in CGI or vice versa. EG: You can't do HTTP Auth via CGI in PHP because, by definition, you'd be passing the password between applications in an insecure way. This is not to say that the rest of the post [cut] isn't true -- In 99% of the cases of using PHP to spew out HTML, you want PHP installed as a Module. You may also, as I do, find it incredibly easy to use as a command line scripting language and thus also want the CGI (or CLI these days) install as well. -- Like Music? http://l-i-e.com/artists.htm From owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Sep 26 05:18:07 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8BB3616A4CE for ; Sun, 26 Sep 2004 05:18:07 +0000 (GMT) Received: from smtp3.adl2.internode.on.net (smtp3.adl2.internode.on.net [203.16.214.203]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E7A2543D1D for ; Sun, 26 Sep 2004 05:18:06 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from malcolm.kay@internode.on.net) Received: from beta.home (ppp34-117.lns1.adl1.internode.on.net [150.101.34.117])i8Q5I4OU000828; Sun, 26 Sep 2004 14:48:04 +0930 (CST) From: Malcolm Kay Organization: at home To: Saccheen Martin , questions@freebsd.org Date: Sun, 26 Sep 2004 14:48:03 +0930 User-Agent: KMail/1.5.4 References: <20040926032304.47194.qmail@web40006.mail.yahoo.com> In-Reply-To: <20040926032304.47194.qmail@web40006.mail.yahoo.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Message-Id: <200409261448.03587.malcolm.kay@internode.on.net> Subject: Re: cannot see Windows after installing FreeBSD X-BeenThere: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: User questions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 26 Sep 2004 05:18:07 -0000 On Sun, 26 Sep 2004 12:53 pm, Saccheen Martin wrote: > Hi Malcolm, > Please try to avoid top posting. -- Like Music? http://l-i-e.com/artists.htm For the record, I helped this person in installing the mod_php4 and some misc extensions and everything worked as wanted. So statement being true or not, for a newbie it should be assumed at the least. And unless you install the module, and load it into the httpd.conf for the html interpreter to see php in the raw, it will not work. You can't load the cgi port of php into apache. 'Cuz it isn't in th= is=20 > case, it fails gracefully. The core dump is seen with portsdb(1) trying to create /usr/ports/INDEX.db -- however, the underlying bug can affect anywhere that ruby uses bdb1_btree files. pkgdb(1) occasionally going a bit funny is a problem that's been known about for some time; usually just deleting and rebuilding /var/db/pkg/pkgdb.db will sort things out. However, I don't think anyone had ever tracked down the root cause of the problem. Then the portsdb coredumping thing came along, and it seems an obvious conclusion that the same thing might be affecting both programs. Note that a fix for the bdb1_btree problem has been in HEAD for a few weeks, and was MFC'd to both RELENG_4 and RELENG_5 a week or so ago. So an alternative fix could be cvsup+buildworld. Unfortunately, I don't think the fix will be applied to any of the existing 4.x-RELEASE or 5.x-RELEASE branches -- it will of course be in 5.3-RELEASE when that comes out, and it's pretty easy to do if you want to patch things yourself. =20 > I'll go ahead and try this, but I suspect that the /var/db/pkg info for= =20 > gnucash or one of it's dependancies got horked up. MacOS X packages can be downloaded from: http://download.openoffice.org/1.1.2/index.html or the English localised MacOS X version can be had directly from here: http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/ooo-osx_downloads.html Cheers, Matthew --=20 Dr Matthew J Seaman MA, D.Phil. 26 The Paddocks Savill Way PGP: http://www.infracaninophile.co.uk/pgpkey Marlow Tel: +44 1628 476614 Bucks., SL7 1TH UK --1SQmhf2mF2YjsYvc Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.6 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFBVoqziD657aJF7eIRAshnAJ4z0Prh2kYhTHIxF4t2XG+Tjj/UMACfUV4i Z2X/Xd2qEMo7F4m3cbfwDPM= =qbIk -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --1SQmhf2mF2YjsYvc-- From owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Sep 26 10:08:35 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DE2F116A4CE for ; Sun, 26 Sep 2004 10:08:35 +0000 (GMT) Received: from ALPHA8.ITS.MONASH.EDU.AU (alpha8.its.monash.edu.au [130.194.1.8]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1A16243D1D for ; Sun, 26 Sep 2004 10:08:35 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from bawig1@student.monash.edu) Received: from localhost ([130.194.13.88]) by vaxh.its.monash.edu.au (PMDF V5.2-31 #39306) with ESMTP id <01LFC35MOWTG8X32JB@vaxh.its.monash.edu.au> for freebsd-questions@freebsd.org; Sun, 26 Sep 2004 20:05:53 +1000 Received: from moe.its.monash.edu.au (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by localhost (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8570FAB54D for ; Sun, 26 Sep 2004 20:05:52 +1000 (EST) Received: from localhost.localdomain (portal-web4.its.monash.edu.au [130.194.13.180]) by moe.its.monash.edu.au (Postfix) with ESMTP id 617C34FB07 for ; Sun, 26 Sep 2004 20:05:52 +1000 (EST) Date: Sun, 26 Sep 2004 10:05:52 +0000 From: Brett Wiggins To: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Message-id: <220.253.39.209.1096192326.51987@my.monash.edu.au> MIME-version: 1.0 X-Mailer: my.monash Portal Mail Reader Content-type: text/plain Content-disposition: inline Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Subject: adduser error X-BeenThere: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: User questions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 26 Sep 2004 10:08:36 -0000 Hi everyone, I am having some problems adding new users to my system. When I use adduser or sysinstall to create a user I get the following error message; pw: user 'testuser' disappeared during update adduser: ERROR: There was an error adding user (testuser). What does this error message mean? Is there another way to add a user that I have missed? I am using FreeBSd 5.2.1 -RELEASE. [Please Cc: me] Short Description: FreeBSD 4.10, installed on /dev/hde (linux lingo), booting via lilo (on hda) -> hde goes to stage0 but stops there. Longer: Recently I have installed FreeBSD (4.10) for compiling TeXlive binaries for i386-freebsd. I used some disk space on ad4/hde (bsd/linux lingo). linux fdisk shows: /dev/hde1 1 20887 167774796 83 Linux /dev/hde2 * 20888 24321 27583605 a5 FreeBSD Then I booted from the CDROM, selected ad4s2, made (bsd-)partitions therein (automatic: btw: Whay is there no /home allocated in the automatic system?) and installed the system. I decided to install the boot0 loader into the MBR of ad4. Then I added the following to my lilo.conf: other=/dev/hde loader=/boot/chain.b label=FreeBSD and tried to boot from there. But what happened: I arrived at boot0 with the following `menu': F1 Linux F2 FreeBSD F5 ?? Default: F2 and that was it, here no Enter, F2 or anything else worked, no reaction, beside Ctrl-Alt-Del and back to lilo. I tried similar lilo entries: other=/dev/hde2 table=/dev/hde loader=/boot/chain.b label=FreeBSD but here the screen stays black at all. To me it looks like there is no boot1 installed anywhere, or boot0 cannot access it. I suspect that this is a problem of the cylinder border. The slice 2 starts well above the 1024 cylinder (or was it sector). Can one of you tell me how I can boot this FreeBSD installation? I can access the bsd partitions in rw mode from linux (kernel-2.6 self compiled) and see all the files, but would really like to boot the beast ;-) [Please Cc: me] Thanks a lot and best wishes Norbert ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Norbert Preining Technische Universität Wien gpg DSA: 0x09C5B094 fp: 14DF 2E6C 0307 BE6D AD76 A9C0 D2BF 4AA3 09C5 B094 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- POLBATHIC (adj.) So i decided to de-install it and start again to see if that would help. Basically functions started to fail in "Fatal Errors" after upgrading to a newer version. Now when installing the package (from ports) it does not give any options to select what i want to install (i.e. no window saying mysql, xml support etc.). Is I think this is the root of the problem and php must not be installing the requred modules to handle the pages I am asking it to serve. PHP installs fine and the test page ( echo php_info(); ) works fine however alot of functons dont work such as preg_match() and mysql_connect() i get Fatal Error: etc... if these are called. Is thier a way to force the install to bring up these options or is thier a file where the values are installed that i could edit? when doing make it says: ===> Found saved configuration for mod_php4-4.3.8_2,1 Is thier a way to locate and delete this file. Atm using: cd /usr/ports/www/mod_php4/ make clean make make install make clean I have googled and searched the archive and nothing (as of yet) has turned up to be of much help. Found this: http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/htdig/freebsd-questions/2004-July/053077.html and followed what it said however when doing "make config" i only get 3 options Apache2, Debug and IPV4. Upgrading your current PHP installation will result in a 'base' PHP installation (no PEAR and no extensions). PEAR can be found in the new devel/php4-pear and devel/php5-pear ports, while the set of PHP extensions to install can be choosen via the meta-ports lang/php4-extensions and lang/php5-extensions, or installing singular extensions individually. If you have a previous php.ini configuration file, be sure to comment out the extension_dir parameter, since the correct path is statically compiled into the PHP binary. For an overview of the modules used with the old PHP binary, use the command "php -m". The messages were sent from the 'www' user on localhost, which is leading me to think somewhere someone has an insecure php or perl script that is allowing someone to designate the recipient, the subject, body, etc. I know the machine is not open-relay (I tested it to double check) and I checked to make sure no one had actually logged in. I grepped all of apache's log files looking for sites that received hits about the same time the mail started going out. What else can I do to find how the mail is being sent? Here is my setup. ISP 1 ISP 2 | | Router 1 Router 2 192.168.0.1 Internet Address A | | | | ---------------------- Switch -------------------- | | | FreeBSD1 FreeBSD2 Windows 2000 192.168.0.254 192.168.0.2 192.168.0.253 Internet Address B (NAT) The problem is if NAT on FreeBSD2 is not running, all the machines can ping each other. If FreeBSD2 runs NAT, ping still works, except FreeBSD2 can't ping Router1 (192.168.0.1) and FreeBSD1 (192.168.0.254). FreeBSD2 can ping to the interent fine. The Windows 2000 machines gets it's IP from DHCP running on FreeBSD2. For a day, FreeBSD can't ping Windows 2000 either. But now it is able to. The NAT configuration on FreeBSD2 is : /sbin/natd -u -a (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Internet Address B) /sbin/ipfw -f flush /sbin/ipfw add divert natd all from any to any via (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Internet Address B) /sbin/ipfw add pass all from any to any The unusual setup is the FreeBSD2 only has one ethernet card, and is doing IP aliasing. I have another setup with 2 FreeBSD boxes, and one or both of them are doing NAT, and doesn't have this 'one way' ping problem. Thanks in advance. Shu --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? In the FreeBSD docs, the % prompt means the example was done as root, while the $ prompt means that the example was done as a normal user. Most shells have a configurable prompt, so the prompts on your machine may not be $ and %. Is that correct? If it is, this is not going to work. Look on the side of the box under System Requirements to see which operatings systems the software is designed for. If you are trying to install a Windows program on Windows, you need to contact your software vendor (support@mcafee.com) for assistance. HTH, Stheg __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? I'm currently using sendmail, and I don't want to change that, so please don't recommend any of the other servers out there. ;) One of my friends needs backup DNS/Mail in the even their connection goes down. How do I go about setting it up so that his user base (about 80 users) will not see any problems in mail transmission and reception if their primary servers go offline. I would like mine to automatically pickup the slack. Thanks for your replies! It marks the place where you should type in the command you wish to execute. The symbol depends on which shell you are using. The % is used by csh and tcsh, the default shell for FreeBSD. If you "su" to root, the symbol changes to #. Of course, you can change these symbols to whatever you want; but if I were you, I would learn a great deal more about FreeBSD before worrying about that. You should read the handbook at http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/index.html (URL may have wrapped) because many of these types of questions are answered there. Also, I suggest reading http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/freebsd-questions/ (URL may have wrapped) so that when you ask a question on this list, you get the best possible answer. Unless you have mirrors on radically different networks, of things like WWW and mail, backup DNS doesn't really accomplish anything. If the net connection goes down, you're offline anyway, so who cares if DNS still works? Backup SMTP is even more difficult to justify. The SMTP standard has transient failure recovery built into it, so if your net connection is down for an hour or so, mail delivery will resume when the connection comes back up. If you set up a backup MX on a different network and your primary MX goes down, end users can't get to their mail anyway, since their POP/IMAP boxes are not configured on the backup server. Backup SMTP is a complicated and expensive thing to get working correctly. You can't set up secondary POP/IMAP boxes on the backup, because then you'd have to have everyone check both. This creates two single points of failure (which is worse than a single single point of failure) You could have mail delivered to both the backup and the primary, but then how does the backup know when the user deletes mail from the primary, or vice-versa? Simple fact of the matter is that the only way for 100% reliable mail delivery is to have a single point where the mail gets delivered to. You'd probably be better off setting up a redundant Internet connection, if mail is that important to this customer, and they get the additional benefit that that creates as a bonus. Additionally, for mail to work smoothly, the backup MX needs to have an updated user list from the primary at all times. It also needs to have the same spam/virus filtering setup as the primary MX or spammers _WILL_ use your backup MX to bypass spam controls. If you don't do these correctly, you will have problems with junk mail, as well as generate collateral spam and piss off other mail admins. (I've seen a badly configured backup SMTP system bring a small ISP to its knees) Now that I've been all doom and gloom ... 1) Ensure that the benefit of backup SMTP/DNS for this customer is really justified. 2) Make sure the backup MX has all the same filtering as the primary. Otherwise, spammers WILL QUICKLY learn to relay their spam through the backup. In fact, many spammers try the MXs in reverse order on the assumption that only the primary has properly maintained junk mail controls. 3) Make sure you have a system to replicate the user list from the primary to the backup, so the backup doesn't accept undeliverable mail. I've done this as simply as a cron job with rsync, but fancy stuff like SQL databases and LDAP are possible as well. -- Bill Moran Potential Technologies http://www.potentialtech.com From owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Sep 26 18:45:19 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AD41416A4CE for ; Sun, 26 Sep 2004 18:45:19 +0000 (GMT) Received: from smtp.infracaninophile.co.uk (smtp.infracaninophile.co.uk [81.2.69.218]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6770B43D39 for ; Sun, 26 Sep 2004 18:45:18 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from m.seaman@infracaninophile.co.uk) Received: from happy-idiot-talk.infracaninophile.co.uk (localhost [IPv6:::1] (may be forged))i8QIjC6G048406 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=NO); Sun, 26 Sep 2004 19:45:13 +0100 (BST) (envelope-from matthew@happy-idiot-talk.infracaninophile.co.uk) Received: (from matthew@localhost)i8QIjCV3048405; Sun, 26 Sep 2004 19:45:12 +0100 (BST) (envelope-from matthew) Date: Sun, 26 Sep 2004 19:45:12 +0100 From: Matthew Seaman To: Eric Crist Message-ID: <20040926184512.GA48082@happy-idiot-talk.infracaninophile.co.uk> Mail-Followup-To: Matthew Seaman , Eric Crist , freebsd-questions@freebsd.org References: <493F1EDF-0FE0-11D9-A586-000D9333E43C@secure-computing.net> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="zYM0uCDKw75PZbzx" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <493F1EDF-0FE0-11D9-A586-000D9333E43C@secure-computing.net> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.1i X-Greylist: Sender IP whitelisted, not delayed by milter-greylist-1.5.6 (smtp.infracaninophile.co.uk [IPv6:::1]); Sun, 26 Sep 2004 19:45:13 +0100 (BST) X-Virus-Scanned: clamd / ClamAV version devel-20040904, clamav-milter version 0.75l on smtp.infracaninophile.co.uk X-Virus-Status: Clean X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-4.8 required=5.0 tests=AWL,BAYES_00 autolearn=ham version=2.64 X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.64 (2004-01-11) on happy-idiot-talk.infracaninophile.co.uk cc: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Backup Mail Server Questions X-BeenThere: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: User questions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 26 Sep 2004 18:45:19 -0000 --zYM0uCDKw75PZbzx Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable On Sun, Sep 26, 2004 at 12:19:56PM -0500, Eric Crist wrote: > I was wondering if anyone has any insight as to having a remote backup=20 > mail server and the setup of such. I would like mine to=20 > automatically pickup the slack. >=20 > Thanks for your replies! Actually, it's pretty simple. Starting with the more fundamental things: to provide a backup DNS, configure a server to secondary for your friends domains. Under Bind9 that means something like this in named.conf: zone "yourfriend.com" { type slave; masters { dns0.yourfriend.com; }; file "s/yourfriend.com"; allow-query { any; }; allow-transfer { none; }; }; If you want that to be available to the world in general (which you usually do, for a mail server) then you need to get your friend to do two things: add a NS record for your server to the "yourfriend.com" zone file and alter the registration of the domain so that your server is listed as one of the registered name servers for the domain. Your friend should also check and make sure that his nameserver has appropriate 'allow-transfer' statements so that your server can AXFR a copy of the zone from it. That's the hard part. The Secondary MX'ing part is fairly easy. All you do is get your friend to add an MX record to the DNS 'yourfriend.com' zone listing your server as a high numbered MXer: $ORIGIN yourfriend.com. @ IN MX 0 smtp.yourfriend.com. 10 smtp2.yourfriend.com. 30 smtp.you.com. And then add: yourfriend.com RELAY to /etc/mail/access and rebuild access.db. That means your machine will accept e-mails addressed to users @yourfriend.com and queue them up for relaying onto to his servers as soon as they come back up again. If his site has to go down for an extended length of time, you can make special arrangements to store incoming mail for longer than the usual 5 days and then flush it over to him when he comes back up. For PHP, one could do something like: grep "mail.*\(" /path/to/htdocs and find mostly all of the places somebody is using PHP's internal http://php.net/mail function. I did that soon after the formmail alert, and made sure that I was cleaning all the input. Of course, if some user is doing this maliciously rather than from ignorance, they could use "mail\n(" and this grep wouldn't find it... A grep expert could probably suggest a better expression to use. -- Like Music? http://l-i-e.com/artists.htm From owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Sep 26 18:58:11 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1773416A4CE for ; Sun, 26 Sep 2004 18:58:11 +0000 (GMT) Received: from ms-smtp-02.nyroc.rr.com (ms-smtp-02.nyroc.rr.com [24.24.2.56]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 95C1643D1F for ; Sun, 26 Sep 2004 18:58:10 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from acarranza@nubiandirections.org) Received: from smtp-server.hvc.rr.com (24-161-25-80.hvc.rr.com [24.161.25.80]) i8QIw7aX009365 for ; Sun, 26 Sep 2004 14:58:08 -0400 (EDT) From: Aaron Organization: Nubian Directions To: FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.org Date: Sun, 26 Sep 2004 14:58:06 -0400 User-Agent: KMail/1.5.2 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: Multipart/Mixed; boundary="Boundary-00=_+ExVB0HYURhPuK+" Message-Id: <200409261458.06180.acarranza@nubiandirections.org> X-Virus-Scanned: Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine Subject: help please X-BeenThere: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: acarranza@nubiandirections.org List-Id: User questions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 26 Sep 2004 18:58:11 -0000 --Boundary-00=_+ExVB0HYURhPuK+ Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline I will like to thank you before hand for what you are doing for bsd user.
