You might want to look at PR bin/22860 (synopsis "[PATCH]
adduser & friends with '$' in usernames",
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=22860).  Plus you
might want to visit the list archive for late November 2000.
Although the "opentrax" messages didn't contribute too much
useful stuff, there have been answers with references to
official docs in them.  And make sure to look at the latest
moves in the repo.  Yar Tikhiy actively dealt with the problem
recently.  You did your homework and searched yourself before
posting, didn't you? :)
