It's run when portupgrade builds ports or downloads packages. I am not sure about the 'why' part, but presumably it's for keeping logs of the build in case you want to look at it. In any case, script is probably the wrong tool for this job, since according to the script(1) manpage: [...] The results are meant to emulate a hardcopy terminal, not an addressable one.
