In case anyone was wondering: the original drive problems that
provoked this thread were thermal shutdown problems.  He has
been running the machine with an extra fan for the drive, and
the problem has not recurred.

FYI: it was a Quantum drive... it would have been obvious from
that that the problem was thermal.  8-).
