Then you're doing something wrong.  It works for me (albeit with a
local nameserver).  I guess you forgot to put /etc/hosts before DNS in
host.conf.  Regardless of `nocanonify' and `nodns', it does for sure a
gethostby* for the local hostname(s).  If you don't use a (local)
nameserver, your /etc/hosts must provide these.
