As written, slaves only reply when the primary is down; this is not the case. Added a mention that there must be two authoritative servers. Revised caching terminology; among other things, caching is rarely *necessary*, but often valuable. At some point, cached records expire, so external lookups are required again. In addition, there's a deeper problem I didn't change. The two paragraphs below imply that slaves and masters are mutually exclusive. For all domains I've deal with, ns2 is a slave from ns1, but listed with an NS record in the zone, and thus authoritative as well. The terminolgy should probably be either clarified or changed, but I don't have a solution to propose at this point. a backup name server, called a slave, must reply to queries when the primary is down or inaccessible. In the slave case, the zone information is transferred from the master name server for the particular zone, and saved in the file specified. If and when the master server dies or is unreachable, the slave name server will have the transferred zone information and will be able to serve it. >How-To-Repeat: Visit http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/network-dns.html >Fix: Apply this patch. --- chapter.sgml.diff begins here --- Index: chapter.sgml =================================================================== RCS file: /home/ncvs/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/advanced-networking/chapter.sgml,v retrieving revision 1.276 diff -u -u -r1.276 chapter.sgml --- chapter.sgml 29 Feb 2004 17:24:51 -0000 1.276 +++ chapter.sgml 1 Mar 2004 04:15:44 -0000 @@ -5036,7 +5036,7 @@ DNS DNS is coordinated across the Internet through a somewhat complex system of authoritative root name servers, and other - smaller-scale name servers who host and cache individual domain + smaller-scale name servers which host and cache individual domain information. @@ -5137,7 +5137,7 @@ org. is a zone under the root zone - example.org is a zone under the + example.org. is a zone under the org. zone @@ -5153,7 +5153,7 @@ As one can see, the more specific part of a hostname appears to - its left. These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. IMO it's the same...a little better the second way, since we can maintain 25% of the translated document. One useful thing would be to know that such a change is going to happen *before* it's done, so translator may stop working on that doc. -- Alex Dupre From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Mar 1 12:51:37 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5128016A4CE; Mon, 1 Mar 2004 12:51:37 -0800 (PST) Received: from fed1mtao01.cox.net (fed1mtao01.cox.net [68.6.19.244]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 17B8243D31; Mon, 1 Mar 2004 12:51:37 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from sku@cox.net) Received: from nightfall.cox.net ([68.107.140.104]) by fed1mtao01.cox.net (InterMail vM.5.01.06.08 201-253-122-130-108-20031117) with ESMTP id <20040301205137.BZXE50.fed1mtao01.cox.net@nightfall.cox.net>; Mon, 1 Mar 2004 15:51:37 -0500 Received: by nightfall.cox.net (Postfix, from userid 1000) id BB9D93146; Mon, 1 Mar 2004 12:51:37 -0700 (MST) Date: Mon, 1 Mar 2004 12:51:37 -0700 From: "Jesus R. This option may work some times, depending on how old docs are. Some times it is just easier to rewrite everything up. This is easier when, for instance, a big amount of big changes are being made. I really prefer writing a new article/chapter/section rather than changing long lines and big paragraphs. > Or > > Is it better to commit the large amount of changes to the document > in question. On the other hand, this is what I do the most. I'd pick this way if there are a big amount of small changes. For instance typos, adding/removing just a few lines, or changing words. I'd pick this way to make a small amount of small changes too. In general, this is what I do the most. -- Jesus R. Perhaps someone on nectar> freebsd-doc@ can explain the best way to set this up to support the nectar> widest variety of tools. It is true, but SGMLDECL is too strong so that if ${PREFIX}/share/sgml/ catalog.ports is used and one of the catalogs has SGMLDECL "xml1.dcl", tools such as nsgmls assume that all documents are written in XML. So people cannot use SGML docs with this declaration. SGMLDECL is for stand-alone, DTD specific catalog, and one of the features that should not be used in the catalog-chain like ${PREFIX}/share/sgml/ catalog.ports. How about using DTDDECL instead? DTDDECL is a more reasonable solution. Some old tools do not support this, but the SGML declaration for the standard SGML and the standard XML are usually built-in the SGML/XML tools, so I do not think that is problematic.
